I grabbed a big pack of frozen fish balls in the grocery yesterday and realized how much I missed eating fish balls bought from the street vendor near previous job at a TV network station. I also remembered how the vendor goes into our garage (yes, my dad just requests the vendor to go inside the garage so we can watch him cook the fish balls too) when I was a kid so we can get the fish balls straight from the frying pan using a barbecue stick. That’s the fun part of it actually!
There was a variety of dipping sauces too from sweet, sweet and chili, chili, vinegar, etc. Then you dip the entire stick of fish ball into the sauce of your choice! Saucy fish ball goodness!
Since I’m a fan of sweet stuff, of course I like the sweet sauce and gave a try in making one for a good Friday snack. Turned out really good!
Sharing the very simple and affordable recipe below:

*** Feel free to cut the ingredients in half for fewer serving
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 cups water
- 12 tbsp sugar
- 6 tbsp soy sauce
Procedure:
- Mix all the ingredients in a pan and then bring to a boil in low heat. Constantly stir until thick.
- In a separate pan, deep fry the fish balls, squid balls, chicken balls, or kikiam separately and then drain the oil. Serve with the sauce.
